Fiberglass mesh is a material used in the fabrication of screened doors. In this installation, the mesh is treated as fabric and sewn into box pleats. It’s adhered to a series of long wooden shelves with carpet tacks, hung in three rows 6’ off the floor on a 15’ gallery wall. The shelves ran along three sides of the wall. This piece was created specifically for this tall, freestanding wall in the gallery. In garment manufacturing, a box pleat is formed when two equal folds of fabric are folded away from each other in opposite directions on the front of a length of fabric. This technique is often employed when constructing cheerleading and girls’ school uniforms to create volume in a skirt. Here, its placement high on the gallery wall allows the viewer to glance up into the pleat, noting the volume and penetrability of light through the mesh. Cast shadows dissipate when the piece is viewed on the wall near natural light.
