Sinthian, Senegal
I had coffee this morning with a villager, Papa. He prepared coffee outside his dwelling, as customary. As we greeted, I presented him with a gift of tea and sugar. He presented me with a small bag of coffee to take home. The coffee Papa served, beans from Senegal but packaged in India, was prepared the traditional way over a small stove with wood charcoal. He also boiled and shared eggs with me, one chicken and one duck.
On Papa’s small farm, besides his prized chickens and ducks, he seems to take in unwanted animals. I befriended a motherless lamb; fed her her bottle, and upon seeing her basically fall asleep standing up, convinced her to nap in my lap. By the time I left I had to pry her out. Now I’m trying to figure out how to bring her home.
