Thread Artist Residency: Finally, Rain!
2022.6.7

Under the thatched roof at Thread in Sinthian, Senegal.

I was startled awake at 1AM this morning by the sound of a jetliner flying dangerously close to my dwelling. I hoped someone would think to retrieve me if this was unusual. It turned out to be the wind! It was ripping so ferociously through the landscape that my studio door blew open and began slamming in unison with the waves of wind. This went on and on. Then power went out. Then the thunder and lighting followed. And finally RAIN!

At 6AM is was still raining but not as heavily so I dashed over to my studio to secure the door. The whole landscape had cooled down considerably from the 104 degrees yesterday. Moussa was out of his dwelling looking around. He was also without power. Luckily the stoves are propane so having morning coffee was not an issue.

I later asked Moussa if this is typical. He said the rainy season begins with strong winds, but climate change has had its effects. Last year the whole season was windy, before that the season began then stalled for a month.

Photos/videos include a morning bird/frog serenade, saturated dry ground, and the library (bookcase) at Thread which I feel the need to organize. I stack a row of books a day. Not included, the shot in the butt I received today from the infamous Dr. Ba! I have had a consistent cough since Dakar; Dr. Ba thinks it’s a combination infection and allergies. I’m may be allergic to that beautiful thatched roof. Now that I’m getting my voice back, I’ll have to practice speaking French. Ugh.

Also included are two small watercolor paintings I completed. I thought my palette here would reflect the landscape. I find I’m more drawn to the saturated colors and patterns of the women’s clothing and textiles at Thread.

I'm slowing stacking the books vertically. They are open to all elements.
